Inferno is decided by usable space

Inferno is a map where small pieces of space create large strategic consequences. Banana control changes the B defense and the rotation load. Mid pressure influences apartments, arch, and the ability to split A. Long corridors and narrow entrances make utility timing important, but grenades do not win space by themselves. They give players a window to move, clear, or hold. The team that uses that window intentionally will usually create more options than the team that throws the same utility without a follow-up.

Start by identifying the pressure point. On T side, it may be banana, apartments, or a mid-to-A route. On CT side, it may be the first banana contest, a defensive smoke, or a controlled apartment peek. The correct opening depends on spawns and utility. Do not spend every grenade in the first seconds if the round plan requires a later execute. Conversely, do not save so much utility that the team never gains playable space. Economy is valuable because it creates future decisions, not because grenades look impressive in the inventory.

Banana control without wasting the round

Banana is a timing battle between control and preservation. Attackers want to move past the first danger, hold the deep area, and threaten a B execute or rotate pressure. Defenders want to delay, damage, and retreat before becoming isolated. Both sides should know what they are paying for. A defender may use a molotov and smoke to deny the lane, then fall back to site. An attacker may clear the close corner, force the utility, and wait for the next phase rather than sprinting into the site.

The key is to track utility and player count. If the defense has used the major delay tools and the attackers still have flashes, the next banana action may be strong. If attackers have already lost a player while fighting for the lane, control may be less valuable than a rotation or a regroup. Use short calls: “we own deep banana,” “two still here,” or “save for execute.” This lets the team convert information into a decision instead of repeating a duel because the lane feels incomplete.

B site entries and trade structure

B is narrow, so spacing is critical. Players must clear close positions, account for the site box and back areas, and preserve enough utility to make the plant possible. If the first player enters too far ahead, the second player cannot trade. If the team stacks at the choke, one molotov or smoke interaction can stop the entire attack. Use a clear order for entry, trade, and post-plant. The first player is not responsible for winning every fight; the first player creates the contact that the second player can convert.

Utility should remove one problem at a time. A flash can move a defender from a close angle. A smoke can cut the arch or site approach. Fire can deny a common position during the plant. Do not expect one grenade to clear the entire site. Call the next angle before the first player reaches it. When everyone knows what comes after the first contact, the team continues moving instead of freezing in the doorway.

A site, apartments, and mid pressure

Inferno A is often shaped by whether the defense must respect apartments and mid at the same time. A team that occupies apartments without a trigger can become disconnected from the main attack. A team that pressures mid without a plan can give the defense a free kill. Define what the split is supposed to do. It might force the arch player to turn, prevent a rotation, or create a timing for a site smoke. If the main group is not ready to act, the split should hold information rather than reveal itself early.

Defenders should avoid giving the attackers a free route through apartments. Information from footsteps is useful, but a late rotation can be punished by a player who waits in a close position. Use the map’s narrow paths to create crossfires, not solo hero fights. A player in library, arch, or site should know which teammate can support the next angle. The value of a defensive position increases when the opponent cannot isolate it without exposing themselves to another line.

Utility economy and timing

Inferno contains many common utility patterns, but patterns are not substitutes for timing. A smoke that blocks a lane at the wrong moment may only delay your own teammate. A molotov thrown before the attackers are ready may expire while they regroup. A flash that arrives after the entry has already started can blind the player it was meant to help. Before throwing, state the event: “this is for the cross,” “this is to force them off banana,” or “this is for the retake.” The event gives the grenade a clock.

Track what the opponents have spent. If a defender has already used a key fire, the next banana pressure may require less utility. If attackers have lost their main smoke, a B hit may need to slow down. Information about grenades is part of the map’s economy. Communicate it as confidently as player positions, but avoid inventing certainty. “I heard one and saw the smoke” is better than claiming the entire site is empty.

CT aggression with a plan to leave

Banana contests, apartments peeks, and mid pressure can give defenders valuable information. They can also create a disadvantage if the player stays after the purpose is complete. Before taking an aggressive action, identify the exit. Where do you fall back? Who covers the retreat? What happens if the opponent does not show? The goal may be to force utility, confirm presence, or gain a tag before returning to site. Once that goal is achieved, continuing the fight is optional.

A defense that survives can rotate and retake. A defense that dies without communication leaves the remaining players guessing. Use sound and spacing to keep the team connected. If the attackers show a heavy banana presence, the B players need to know whether help is coming or whether the site will be held. If the attackers pressure apartments, A players must preserve enough utility to delay a split. Inferno rewards defenders who manage time rather than only chase kills.

Post-plant and retake decisions

The B post-plant should account for banana and the arch approach. A player watching one line cannot ignore the route the defuser may use. On A, players should use apartments, pit-like positions, arch, and site cover in a way that creates overlapping shots. If the bomb plant is safe but the positions are not tradeable, the team may still lose. Choose the plant and post-plant location together.

Retakes should be coordinated around utility and information. A flash can clear a close position, while a smoke can delay the post-plant player’s line. Entering one by one allows the defenders to trade each kill into another. If the round is not realistically recoverable, preserve the economy. The correct decision is the one that maximizes future round value, not the one that looks most active on the scoreboard.

Practice Inferno with one lane

Use the CS2list directory to find Inferno sessions and choose a lane for the evening. Practice banana stop timing, apartments information, or a specific site post-plant. Do not attempt to improve every lane at once. After each round, identify where the decision changed: the first grenade, the first death, the late rotation, or the post-plant spacing. Inferno becomes easier when you can name the moment the team lost usable space.

Good Inferno play is not a permanent fight for every corridor. It is a sequence of controlled exchanges: spend utility to gain time, use time to gain information, and use information to choose where the next players stand. When both sides understand that sequence, the map feels less random. The rounds become readable because each piece of space has a cost and a purpose.
